The Silent Voice
Day has yielded our furrowed field;
It’s not a night to pause,
(yet here I stand)
Looking down at a shattered moon’s cold sparks
on the puddled earth.
Such ephemeral forms!
Each raised up by the homeless wind
That moves on, unconcerned;
To send them all a-scurrying back,
To the One that gave them birth.
See! Now her face is whole again!
No sound.
But then – I hear! (a silent voice?)
Reflect, it saith; I’ve called them home;
Embraced the busy shoal.
Be calm. Be calm and know that all below
Must spurn the world’s allure;
Be calm so I can see my likeness mirrored in your Soul.
Oh blinded age,
Since we were taught in symbol and in dance,
(could one but prize it)
When the cyclic Earth our guru was; her broken rounds
our learning.
What say your books?
T’is useless death when heaven’s breath the form no more
sustains?
Ah no, not death, the stillness says, but pilgrim son returning.
